Thorness Saltmarsh Site Visit

16 Nov 2011

Ian, Claire, Carol and Sam from the Natural Entreprise office went for an early morning visit to Thorness Saltmarsh.

An amazingly successful project, now in its ninth year. Extensive work was carried out in 2002 to limit the reach of the freshwater and encourage the salt water to flow inland with each tide. The results have been a very rapid expansion of the saltmarsh and we think one of the best examples of managed retreat in the Solent.

Saltmarsh is important because:

  • It provides a protection from the sea
  • It provides an important refuge for birds
  • It contains many rare plants which grow nowhere else
  • It has been lost from many areas due to “coastal squeeze”
