Places for People Projects
Places for People
The natural environment provides an opportunity for us to enjoy a fantastic sensory experience, and the sense of well-being that brings. Our diverse array of plant and animal life stimulates many questions. Through our Places for People theme we try and help you get the most from your wildlife adventure! We provide a subtle interpretation of what you might see, why it is important and how you can help protect it, as well as highlighting the best spots. We provide easier access to them through pathway improvements, installation of benches and similar measures. You’ll often see the impact of our Island Climate Care and Wildlife themes at the same time as enjoying your spot of rural tranquility. We’ve listed below a couple of examples of the sorts of projects the Places for People theme supports.

The Troll Trail
The Troll Trail is a highly accessible route which can be used by walkers of all abilities, cyclists, wheelchair users and families with pushchairs. We’ve made the most of the trail by providing a range of wildlife signs which give pointers as to what you might see if you pause to Stop – Look – Listen along the track. At Merstone Station (long disused and now a wildlife haven) we have provided a picnic area and a maze to keep children (of all ages) happy. Elsewhere on the route you will find trolls created by local Island artists, as well as more benches to rest your weary feet.
Parkhurst Red Squirrel Safari and Viewing Hide
Follow the family-friendly trail around historic Parkhurst forest where our fun pop-up signs will help you understand more about the Isle of Wight’s famous Red Squirrel population, many of whom call Parkhurst home. The trail will lead you to our fantastic viewing hide, where you can sit and view the acrobatics above you if the squirrels feel like playing today. You’ll also see and hear much more around the forest.
